This recall affected the sale of apple juice nationwide at stores like Aldi, Dollar General, Walmart, and more. Here’s what we know.
If apple juice is your family’s breakfast beverage, you’ll want to check the label ASAP. The FDA in the United States has posted a recall for 133,500 cases of apple juice sold at retailers nationwide.
Florida-based apple juice manufacturer Refresco Beverages U.S. Inc. initiated the recall after potentially high levels of inorganic arsenic were found in its product. The levels exceeded industry standards, but we’re glad to report that no illnesses were reported.
Here’s what you need to know about the apple juice recall and what to do if you feel ill.
What apple juice is being recalled?
The list below includes the retailers and brand names involved in the recall. Note that the “best by” dates from affected bottles at Walmart does not match the “best by” dates from all the other retailers.
This is because Walmart was part of an earlier recall from August 15, and this is an expansion of that recall.
- Aldi: The 64-ounce plastic bottle of Nature’s Nectar 100% Apple Juice has been recalled in the following states: Florida, Georgia, Indiana, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. The “affected bottles’ best by” dates are March 26 and March 27, 2025. The code on the recalled bottles is CT89-4, and the UPC is 4099100036381.
- B.J.’s Wholesale Club: Wellsley Farms 100% Apple Juice in 96-ounce plastic bottles is recalled. The “best by” date is March 26, 2025, and the code is CT89-5. The affected states are Florida, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
- Dollar General: Clover Valley 100% Apple Juice is recalled. Its “best by” date is March 27, 2025, and its code is CT89-4. The affected juice is sold in 64-ounce plastic bottles at stores in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, and South Carolina.
- Essential Food: Urban Meadow 100% Apple Juice sold in 64-ounce plastic bottles is on the recall list. The “best by” date is March 26, 2025, and the code is CT89-1. This brand was sold only in Pennsylvania.
- Lidl: The 64-ounce plastic bottles of Solevita 100% Apple Juice are recalled. The “best by” date is March 27, 2025, and the code is CT89-4. They were sold in Virginia stores.
- Market Basket: The 64-ounce plastic bottles of Market Basket 100% Apple Juice from concentrate are recalled in Maine. Look for the “best by” date of March 25, 2025, and code CT89-1.
- Walgreens: Nice! 100% of Apple Juice in 64-ounce plastic bottles has been recalled. The “affected bottles have a best by” date of March 25, 2025, accompanied by the code CT89-1. The affected states are Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
- Walmart: Two sizes of Great Value Apple Juice are recalled. This includes six-packs of 8-ounce plastic bottles marked with “best by” dates of December 26 and 27, 2024, and the code CT89-6. The bottles were sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Also recalled were 96-ounce plastic bottles stamped with “best by” dates of December 26 through 28, 2024, and the code CT89-5 near the sell-by date. The following states had affected juice: Indiana, Maine, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and the territory of Puerto Rico.
- Weis: Weis brand 100% Apple Juice in 64-ounce plastic bottles is recalled in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The “sell by” date on affected bottles is March 25, 2025, and the code is CT89-1.
What should I do next?
The first thing you should do is check the “best by” dates and codes on your bottles of apple juice. If you have a bottle part of the recall, it’s best to throw it out.
Symptoms of elevated levels of arsenic include numbness, tingling or pins and needles in hands and feet, and stomach pain or diarrhea. Here’s more information from the CDC on arsenic toxicity. If you feel ill, don’t hesitate to call 911 or go to the hospital immediately.
